Ahh-Mazing Concert: Chester French and Kid Cudi 6/26

Last night probably was the 2nd or 3rd best concert I've been to in my life. The crowd was hyped, the music was great, and the performers were 2 of my favorites. Paper magazine and Ray Ban brought Kid Cudi and Chester French to the South Street Seaport for a free concert and it was amazing.
Chester French started the big show...after a rain delay. The crowd wasn't into it the whole time, but I definitely was. They did:
1. Jimmy Choos
2. She Loves Everybody
3. Bebe Buell
4. Neal
5. Life in LA but Life In NY featuring Travis McCoy
6. Starting a Band-Two Mans
7.Hella Good Cover

And then it was time for Kid Cudi at about 9pm. I just want to say that he is way skinner than I thought he would be...like way to skinny, but I do have to say that he is a great performer. I loved how he was drinking a Corona the whole time. He's definitely appreciative of his fans too.
Set List:
1.Down and Out
2.Dat New New
3.Is There Any Love sans Wale
A brief little disbelief moment of his Aug. 25 album drop date
4. Cudi Spazzin'
5.Can Be
6. Man on the Moon
MJ tribute moment. " We gonna keep making ill ass joints for mj"
7. Some song i don't remember
8.Excuse My Mood
9. The Sky Might Fall
Announcing tour with Asher Roth
10. Poke Her Face
11. Embrace the Martian
12. Day 'N Nite

Alex and Sam

These two are the artists from LA who do today's song of the day. I like them because they're mad chill and play hands-on acoustic, brass, you name it instruments. Sometimes I get this Beatles-ish sound but then I get something else. I really like Sam's jazzy heartfelt voice...It kinds reminds me of Norah Jones and Emily King with a richer and jazzier sound. They have a jazz/pop/folk feel to them. And I think their voices blend nicely..like to the point of hypnotization into a chill state.
Alex and Sam met in high school and made a musical match. All of the songs are written, produced, arranged, and recorded by Alex. So there's definite talent there in my opinion.
So you should check them out on their website. They even have free downloads of 3 of their songs.
I really like this song/performance so enjoy.

Song of the Day: "See You Through"

I found this group while I was searching for music for my internship and I thought they were pretty good. I picked this song because I think it has the best instrumentals. I really like the guitar riff at 2:36 and then how it transitions to the keyboard and then trumpet. I just love it when things aren't all electronic.

Song of the Day: "PYT"

Everyone should know why this is the song of the day plus if you sing this to some girl you might get some points.
RIP Michael.

Song of the Day: "Enjoy Yourself"

I'm not one to be "Oh my God I love Drake" because I think some artists are better than him, but I did like this song when it came on shuffle this morning. It's so calming and nice to hear when you start the day. I really like the guitar and drums and I guess his voice is good too.
But anyway "enjoy yourself."

Song of the Day: "Purple Haze"

I've been wondering why don't we have quality rock music these days? I just want someone to rock on the guitar like Jimi did. Is that too much to ask for? Well maybe it is because he is the best, but how about something close?
I hope you like the throw back because sometimes you just need to listen to some Jimi. He's good for many occasions.

Song of the Day: "Still Here"

I haven't posted any Girl Talk in awhile, so I figure it's time. You definitely have to be in the mood to listen to Gregg Gillis' awesome mashes..like getting ready to go out, working out, or if you're just have a great day. For me it's the latter. I love how it has "No Diggity," "Flashing Lights," a little Thom Yorke, and ace of base. It's just amazing to me. Here's a great video to get the whole experience.

Underdog Who Strives to Be Top Dog: Young Mix

Caleb first introduced me to Young Mix when I interviewed him and when I asked if anyone had suggestions on who to interview, Young Mix's name came up again. I decided what the hell. He's young, multi-talented, and has a second album coming out soon, let's see what this guy is all about. His real name is Martin Encinas and he's from the Bay area, but his performing name definitely suits this talented rapper/producer.
So here's a look into what he's all about. Straight up/ Unedited aim chat...trying to be bicoastal and efficient is great. (Notice the time...he was up mad early. Now that's dedication.)

11:24:05 AM Katie: Why do you go by young mix?

11:27:46 AM youngmix: It all started in middle school when I would go to a studio everyday after school and the engineer that would teach us how to use protools and the other studio equipment. So he would always ask us who wanted to go mix the music and I would always volunteer, I mean like always not letting anyone else do it...lol So he said a comment like "you're the lil mixer for the studio now." He said something like that with the word Mix and it stayed with me. There was different variations before it became Young Mix, but thats how I honestly got my name

11:29:15 AM Katie: nice. have you always done rap and hip hop or do you dabble in anything else?

11:30:29 AM youngmix: As an artist I have always done rap, in high school I did some percussion. But as an engineer I have experimented with other genres of music

11:31:20 AM Katie: what other genres?

11:34:02 AM youngmix: Well one of my good friend, also the other member of my group, decided to record an album where he sings with a guitar. So that was all new for me. It was more alternative and like folk...lol

11:34:39 AM Katie: so you have a group? can you tell me a little more about that?

11:35:25 AM youngmix: Well I started as a group of 3 back in middle school, but now it's just 2.. Caleb and I

11:36:49 AM Katie: ok. so do you like producing or rapping/performing more?

11:38:19 AM youngmix: They're both my passions...

11:39:55 AM Katie: what do you like writing most about? from your page it seems like san fran pride

11:40:54 AM youngmix: lol

11:44:11 AM youngmix: Well mos def my city, and most of the time I write about experiences I have had.. But I also been working on being more versatile with my music like I write stories through my songs, I try to make music that will catch the attention of other listeners outside of San Francisco/Bay Area

11:45:49 AM Katie: with that being said is there a certain san francisco/ bay area sound then? if so explain.

11:48:49 AM youngmix: I mos def think there was at a certain time period like during hyphy, but now (especially since I moved out of the Bay Area to L.A) people think it's still hyphy. But NOT EVERYTHING IN THE BAY IS HYPHY...lol In fact, San Francisco was never Hyphy

11:49:22 AM youngmix: Don't get me wrong, we did support hyphy and contributed to the movement

11:49:51 AM youngmix: But if you lived in San Francisco, it was not hyphy like it was in Oakland, it's place of origin

11:50:10 AM Katie: haha way to get defensive

11:50:45 AM Katie: ok so where do you get your influences in music since you're trying to reach out to everyone?

11:51:34 AM youngmix: Not defensive..lol but more of a heads up like there's a lot of good music coming out now here in the Bay Area that isn't hyphy...like the new Young Mix "The Underdog" Street Album...lol

11:52:50 AM youngmix: My influence comes from my city because I feel people don't really know how it is out here and Im trying to do the same thing Biggie, Jay-Z, NaS all did.. They let the whole world know how NY was

11:54:06 AM youngmix: Also music has been a big part of my life, my grandfather used to be an artist for a living in Mexico, so I always saw my dad with a guitar in his hand or my uncles playing music growing up. That is also a big influence growing up

11:56:47 AM Katie: so how does your new album showcase the bay area?

11:57:42 AM youngmix: I mean when I recorded, lets just say San Francisco/Bay Area was all I knew and seen so that is mos def reflected in the CD

11:59:39 AM Katie: so i'm not familiar with the bay area music scene, how big is it that you got Big Rich and San Quinn on your album?

12:03:10 PM youngmix: Well San Quinn is a legend out here in the Bay Area, he's from San Francisco and he has been rapping for years. He has received national attention at a few peaks in his career, and he was also in the book of Guinness World Records for his collaborations with other artists (this was of course before lil wayne did the same...lol)

12:05:56 PM youngmix: Big Rich is a more newer artist but still has been in the game for a while. I known Big Rich personally before he became this big because he also use to go to the studio I would go to and he was like a mentor to a lot of us. But Big Rich is making major power moves for the Bay Area. He was the 1st San Francisco artist to get his video on BET 106 & Park, he has videos on MTV Jams, etc etc. He is mos def getting a lot of attention nationwide and he has a new album dropping at the end of this month

12:06:58 PM youngmix: So with that being said, these two artist are big out here and well respected, so doing a song with them was a blessing because I was a fan before I was able to record with them

12:08:05 PM Katie: thats awesome

12:08:33 PM Katie: so what's your favorite track on your album? and why do you think people will like it?

12:10:31 PM youngmix: I don't have just one favorite track or else I don't feel I would have put the rest on the project...lol but the songs I enjoyed recording the most were "From Tha City" ft San Quinn & Big Rich.. and "The Dopeness" ft Caleb... but it was a fun album overall

12:11:16 PM Katie: i guess that's true. i really liked the dopeness too

12:11:25 PM youngmix: Thanks

12:12:06 PM Katie: oh so i was reading your notes on your page. it said you might get an internship with a record label...howd that turn out?

12:15:23 PM youngmix: I had an internship, but it didn't end up working out the way I wish it did. But even though I didn't have an internship anymore I still learned something about the Music Industry: you have to continue striving and working hard to get what you want on your own because you can't rely on people and this industry is quick to forget who you are

12:20:40 PM Katie: i feel like thats true for a lot of entertainment industries. But i'll wrap this up cuz its almost been an hour. so 2 questions. what's your ultimate goal? And what is your album "The Underdog: The streets Are Listening" going to add to my music collection?

12:26:30 PM youngmix: My ultimate goal as an artist is to spark someone else's interested in music like it was for me. To listen to my rhymes and you have to rewind it one more time because the delivery and/or metaphors were to complex to grasp at once, and making the listener be like "That's dope" or something...lol And cuz Im human I would also like to support myself financially through music as well. As a producer I would like to help create some of the best music and be known within the Music Industry. But my short term goal is to do this album with Caleb, as a group, it's gonna be dope..trust me...lol

12:30:30 PM youngmix: "The Underdog" Street Album is designed for the listener to get a picture.. What I mean is, I really felt/feel like the underdog, so every song is just an addition to the bigger picture. Im a fan of music and I enjoy listening to full albums from start to end, so that is what I tried to compose, an album one can listen to from start to end so they get the bigger picture. An this bigger picture consists of feelings and emotions of one being the underdog and working to overcome those struggles through a San Francisco state of mind...

12:30:47 PM youngmix: And thank you for having this interview with me, I appreciate it

12:31:07 PM youngmix: "The Underdog" available now on Amazon.com & iTunes

12:31:29 PM youngmix: Check me out on myspace.com/youngmix and follow me on twitter.com/youngmix

12:31:51 PM youngmix: and Young Mix & Caleb will be the next project to look forward to

So there ya have it. There's a lot of info I didn't ask, so hopefully you'll be intrigued to check him out and maybe you can ask him yourself. Help him get to his dreams people. Ohh and don't forget to show support on July 12th, or maybe earlier...follow him to make sure, and buy his music.
Thanks Young Mix!

Song of the Day: "Big Poppa"

This is the first song that came to mind when thinking about this great holiday even though it doesn't really correlate. But who doesn't like this song and want a little B.I.G in their life?

Song of the Day: "Sincerely, Jane"

Janelle Monae rocks to me, so I don't understand why she isn't huge yet. I love her old feel and style. And her vocals are pretty rockin'. This is the first song I heard from her.

New Music Flying All Over The Place

Twitter is one of the easiest ways to find out about new music. If you don't have an account, I suggest you get one just so you can hear about everything.
This is what I saw today:
-New Song from Lupe (via Quddus): "Shining Down," is featuring Matthew Santos, who he collaborated with for his other hits like "Superstar," "American Terrorist," and "Fighters." I'm thinking this combo is a good one. It has the slower vibe of "Fighters" and some catchiness like "Superstar," but on a different level. There's a lil autotune thrown in there for all you lovers too.
"Just look up at the sky. see that i'm everywhere. shining down on you"
Get it here

-Leak of Mickey Factz's "Flying Balloons": It's produced by Cookin' Soul and it's the first leaked song from the mixtape they're working on together. I love all the rythmns that are going on in this song and the lyrics are good. Give it a listen/download.

-Laura Izibor's album was released today. I wrote about here earlier and now her album has dropped and she's going on tour with Maxwell. Read more here.

Song of the Day: "Out of Control (State of Emotion)"

I've been a fan of Kenna for awhile and this song happens to fit the mood I'm in right now. I don't know what it is about him, but I really like what he does. He hasn't come out with an album since 2007, but he's supposed to drop one in 2010.
"And I don't care what is happening
No getting frustrated! I wanna be sedated!
So I don't care, love come with me
Yeah it's doing my head in, you're doing my head in
And I cant change the state of emotion!
it's insane how it feels"

Song of the Day: "Your Voice"

I just love this song..no explanations really. I just want to be on a beach with some cold beverages.

Song of the day: "Roses"

This song is off of Mos Def's new album "Ecstatic." If you haven't listened to it yet, you really should because it's really good.
I like this song because I like the piano, Georgia Anne Muldrow's voice, Mos Def's voice, and the bite of the harmony...kinda hard to explain but it's not something you usually hear. It's definitely an old jazzy/blues feel.
I looked into it a little more and it looks like this song originated by Georgia and Mos Def liked it so much that they collaborated and he was able to put it on his cd.

New Song: "I'm Good"

This is is good. I personally love whenever the Neptunes produce anything, and you can definitely tell it's by them. It has a chill but upbeat sound to it. And you know there's a high chance it's gonna be good when Clipse and Pharrell are on it.
Thanks to Complex Mag. putting the link up because the cd, Till The Casket Drops, doesn't come out till September.
Take a listen and if you want to get it go to Complex's site.

Song of the Day: "Congratulations"

It seems like everyone is getting jobs, internships, or getting their feet through the door of their dreams lately so I just wanted to dedicate this song of the day to you guys...you know who you are. Hopefully everything will keep falling into place for everyone else. Just keep positive and listen to great music..

"i got the key to happiness and all the copies
remember this day like you bought a poppie
and damn how it get so nice"-Drake
And for all the reader who are offended by Drake's cursing here's a song for you too. We'll just saying your Amazing for doing your thing..haha

Teitur

So I know this may be annoying that all the posts are about Teitur, but I didn't know how the little download widget thingy would work. But for all you non-hip-hopers maybe you'll like this guy.
Here's the low down...from what I can tell:
He was born in the Faroe Islands, which is between Scotland and Iceland. This may be the reason for his storytelling songs and his occasional gloomy instrumentals. This is what he has to say about it on his myspace page:
“The place is very dramatic, the weather conditions are averse, there is a lot of silence, it’s a part of me, it’s in my dreams, it is hard for me not to put some of that atmosphere into my music as I feel so attached to it.”
I personally like the storytelling of his songs. It makes it easier to listen to...you actually want to hear what is going to happen. His song "Catherine the Waitress" is a little different from the others. It's more up beat and it sounds like he's using a wooden xylophone...which I think is amazing. I love it when singers use all kinds of instrumentals.
But the main reason why I love this guy is because his voice is relaxing. I could definitely see myself listening to his stuff on a rainy day or just relaxing.
Go check him out on his myspace: http://www.myspace.com/teitur and you can follow him on twitter: @teitur

Teitur - Welcome to the Singer

Song of the Day: "The Singer"

This isn't the normal kind of song I would post, but I thought it was beautiful. Teitur has this soft sorrowful voice that I want to keep listening to...well at least in this song. I also like how he is telling a legit story with the song. If you like the song you can get a free download by signing up for the newsletter on the other post.

Adele Remixes

I guess I'm slow about knowing that there are remixes of Adele songs, but if you are too this will make your day. There is an album called 1988 with remixes of Adele by Mick Boogie, and it's marvelous. Check it out.

Follow Up: LeVar Thomas

Yesterday, LeVar posted a link for a new song,"What You Mean to Me." It's a Hellz Yea song with LeVar adding his swooning vocals in the background. It's a love song that isn't too mushy so I like. I'm thinking people like it to since it's been downloaded 79430 times. So let's keep the number growing and show some support.
"This is 50/50 love we give and take from each other."
Go here to download.

Song of the Day: "You'll Find A Way Player"

I can't get enough of the Southerngold mixtape so I had to put up another song. This song is a mash of Andre 3000's "International Player" and Santigold's "You'll Find A Way." The lyrics mesh extremely well and I love the flow.
Happy Tuesday!

Southerngold Mixtape

I'm glad someone is keeping me in touch with new things while I'm on my little trip to NYC....thanks Edwin. Well Edwin sent me this link to mixtape of Santigold songs with southern rappers' lyrics. I think it's brilliant because I'm a fan of Santigold and then the rap songs they use are all favorites.
You can download it if you scroll all the way down or click here.

Song of the Day: "Hustlin' With The Lights Out"

A mix of Rick Ross and Santigold is genius to me. This song is a combination of Rick Ross' "Hustlin'" and Santigold's "Lights Out." I think the combo makes a pretty good summer song. The beat to "Lights Out" has the summer feel and then "Hustlin'" just brings great memories back and brings in the rap fans.
Hope you like.

Song of the Day: "If You LIke Pina Coladas"

Hello! I've been on a hiatus because I've been pounding the NYC pavement trying to find an internship. Hopefully the aching feet and adventures in the rain pay off. Anyway...I've picked this classic because I like getting caught in the rain and pina coladas. Most people don't even know the story behind this song, so I included this video with lyrics and horrible illustrations. I think it's a pretty great story so pay attention.
